Dreams and their meanings have been a source of fascination for humans for over 5,000 years. The ancient Egyptians believed that dreams foretold the future. Some tribes in the South Pacific regards dreams as having the power to heak physical problems. Sigmund Freud, whose book The Interpretation of Dreams was published in 1900, thought that dreams revealed our subconscious.
Whatever the purpose of dreams, we now know that we dream for only a small part of the time that we are asleeo. Most of the time we are on slow-wave sleep. Dreaming, however, takes place during the short periods of sleep known as REM sleep.
During REM sleep, our brain activity is similar to that when we are awake, but our body cannot move freely. Each night, as long as we are undisturbed, we have four periods of REM sleep. The first comes about ninety minutes after we fall asleep. The second and third occur in the middle of the night and the last one just before we wake up. If we remember any dreams at all, they are from this last period.
People never get tired of talking about their dreams and about what they might mean. Dozens of books have been writen on the subject. While they might disagree on the details, these books contain some similar beliefs.
If, for example, you dream about catching fish, then you will be lucky. If your dream contains ants, then the next day there will be many small things that annoy you. A dream of an ape means that someone close to you will get sick. Dreams about apples are good, especially if the apples are ripe. On the other hand, dreams of vegebtables means that bad luck is coming.
Dreams of flying are very common. Most people think that this means that the dreamer feels trapped and wants to be free. However, according to the "experts", dreams of flight can have many different explanations. If you dream about flying through space, then it suggests that a war or some major disaster is coming. If you dream about seeing the sun when you fly, then it suggests that you should stop worrying so much.
Some scientists believe that dreams are nothing but "random nerve-cell activity". This may be true; still, it is fun to think that an activity shared by all mammals may have deeper meanings. And just to be on the safe side, if you dream that you are flying high above a lot of ants, with a giant tomato in your hand, you'd better stay in bed the next day.
